Puerto Rico 2003 - Baseball game

When in Puerto Rico I enjoyed reading the San Juan Star, an English language daily paper. It forwent its usual practice of putting all the local political stories first, in favor of very thorough coverage of the war in Iraq, which was underway at that time. The paper also gave me some ideas of things to do - one was to go to a baseball game!

The Montreal Expos came up with this gimmick to hold numerous "home" games in San Juan, hosting all of the other National League teams in the process for series of three or four games. Three of those series were held during my trip there, and I went to one of the games - vs the Mets.

The crowd was mostly Mets fans, because of the close affinity between Puerto Ricans and New Yorkers - there are a lot of family ties. Both teams had some Puerto Rican and other Hispanic members, so there was a hullabaloo whenever one of those players came out, or did something noteworthy.

I forget the score, but the Expos won the game, and swept the series. By the time the series was done, the Expos became the de facto "home" team, and fans became known as Expo Ricans.

Here are a couple exterior shots of the stadium, named after Hiram Bithorn, the first Puerto Rican player in major league baseball: Bithorn stadium More Bithorn stadium

After the game I spent a half hour looking for my car! I had forgotten where I put it. Here is proof that I found it: My rental car
