We stayed at the Empress Hotel, which is a grand old railroad hotel that faces Victoria’s harbor.

Emily Carr was a painter and writer whose lifelong inspiration was the coastal environment of British Columbia. She was active during the early part of the 20th century. This statue stands at a corner of the Empress property.
The monkey on Ms. Carr’s shoulder and the dog were residents of her household.
Across the street from the Empress was carillon that chimes on the hour.
