California Vacation 2002-2003
January 4, 2003
On January 4, we posed with our inn-sitter (she runs Prufrock's 10 days each month while the owners
go globetrotting), visited the beach again, this time to the north of town, and saw a nature
preserve/salt marsh near the shore.
Afterwards we drove to Santa Maria which is about half way to Cambria where my brother and
sister-in-law Stewart and Julie live. On the way we stopped at the Santa Barbara mission.
The mission was built a gazillion years ago (late 18th century), but was destroyed a number of times
by earthquakes & fires, and then rebuilt. The fountain and the laundry trough, shown here, are original
elements from the mission, circa 1808.
Here's Father Junipero Serra, who started it all (built a bunch of California missions, approximately
one day journey apart), and another shot of the laundry trough, fountain, and the background, facing
southwest.
We finally got to Santa Maria, and had lunch/dinner with Stewart and Julie.
We must have gotten tired of taking pictures, because that's all we've got! The next morning we drove
back to the Los Angeles International Airport and returned to Detroit.
